Xander’s Power Smoothie

Xander’s Power Smoothie

My son is a smoothie enthusiast. He’s combined pretty much everything but the kitchen sink to make a smoothie. Through trial and error he’s developed one of the best smoothie recipes ever conceived. He’s a free-wheeling dude and won’t give it a name so I made one for him. I present Xander’s Power Smoothie.

What is a Power Smoothie?

A power smoothie is a drink made from pureed raw fruit and/or vegetables, using a blender. A smoothie often has a liquid base such as water, fruit juice. Dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, ice cream or cottage cheese can also be used. Smoothies may be made using other ingredients, such as non-dairy milk, crushed ice or sweeteners (honey or sugar). Some folks will add muscle enhancing powder to a smoothie.

A green smoothie typically consists of 40–50% green vegetables (roughly half), usually raw green leafy vegetables. Spinach, kale, swiss chard, collard greens, celery, parsley, or broccoli are great choices. The remaining ingredients are mostly or entirely fruit. Wheatgrass and spirulina are also used as healthy ingredients. Most green leafy vegetables have a bitter flavor when served raw. The bitterness is smoothed out by combining fruit. Some blender manufacturers now specifically target their products towards making green smoothies and provide a booklet of recipes for them.
